95th Academy Awards

The 95th Academy Awards took place on March 12, 2023, and it was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time, following 2017 and 2018. In his opening monologue, Kimmel joked about the previous year's incident when Will Smith walked up to the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock. The movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once" won 'Best Picture', while Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win the 'Best Actress' award for her role in the film. Ke Huy Quan, who had given up on acting due to a lack of opportunities, won 'Best Supporting Actor,' and Jamie Lee Curtis won the award for 'Best Supporting Actress' for her performance in the same movie. Brendan Fraser, who had been dealing with health and personal struggles for years, won the 'Best Actor' for his comeback role in the movie 'The Whale' and received a standing ovation. 'Navalny,' a documentary about Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, won in the 'Best Documentary' category. After the award was announced, his wife, Yulia Navalny, said  'I dream of the day when you will be free and our country will be free.'

In 2024, Russian authorities announced Navalny died in an Arctic prison of natural causes. The U.N. human rights expert on Russia said was Moscow's responsibility as he was either killed in jail or died from detention conditions that amounted to torture.
