8th Academy Awards

Now Showing: 'Best Movie' Poster

The 8th Academy Awards, recognizing cinematic achievements for films released in 1935, were held on March 5, 1936, at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Hal Mohr won for 'Best Cinematography' for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Mohr became the first and only person in Oscar history to win via a write-in vote, a practice that was discontinued after this year. 'Best Picture' went to Mutiny on the Bounty, a film that received multiple nominations. The 'Best Actor' award was given to Victor McLaglen for his role in The Informer,' while Bette Davis won 'Best Actress' for her performance in Dangerous. In the category of 'Best Original Story,' The Scoundrel by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur took the honor.
