Now Showing: 'Best Film' Winner
The 5th Academy Awards, hosted by actor Conrad Nagel, took place on November 18, 1932 at the Ambassador Hotel. Three new categories honored short films, including cartoons' and live action productions of comedy and novelty. Walt Disney received an honorary award for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Brand Hotel won 'Best Picture' without being nominated for any other category, which made it the only winner to date to achieve this feat, and the first of five to win it without a 'Best Director' nomination. Wallace Beery ('The Champ') and Fredric March ('Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)' tied for 'Best Actor.' They came within one vote of each other so, according to Academy rules at the time, they shared the recognition. Marie Dressler won 'Best Actress' for EMMA, and the award for 'Best Original Story' went to 'What Price Hollywood?.' The award for 'Best Cinematography' was won by Lee Garmes for Shanghai Express. This was the last ceremony where no movie won more than two awards.
