4th Academy Awards

Now Showing: 'Best Movie' Poster

The 4th Academy Awards ceremony was held on November 10, 1931, at the Sala D'Oro in the Biltmore Hotel. The movie 'Cimarron' won the 'Best Picture' award, making it the first Western film to do so. The film had received a then-record seven nominations and was the first film to win more than two awards. For nearly 59 years, 'Cimarron' remained the only Western movie to win Best Picture until 'Dances with Wolves' won in 1991. Jackie Cooper was the youngest nominee for almost 50 years, and the first child star to receive an Oscar nomination. He remains the second-youngest Oscar nominee for his work in 'Skippy' and the only 'Best Actor' nominee under the age of 18. During the ceremony, as nominees were being announced, nine-year-old Cooper had fallen asleep on the shoulder of 'Best Actress' nominee Marie Dressler. When Dressler was announced as the winner, Cooper had to be eased onto his mother's lap.
