The 31st Academy Awards, held on April 6, 1959, celebrated the best films of 1958 and was held at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The film 'Gigi' was the highlight of the night, setting a new Oscar record by winning in every category it was nominated for, which included 'Best Picture,' 'Art Direction-Set Decoration,' 'Color Cinematography,' 'Costume Design,' 'Directing', 'Film Editing,' 'Music – Song' (for 'Gigi' by Frederick Loewe, music, and Alan Jay Lerner, lyrics), 'Music – Scoring of a Musical Picture, and Writing –'Screenplay based on material from another medium. The Best Actress award was given to Susan Hayward for her role in 'I Want to Live!', while David Niven won Best Actor for 'Separate Tables'.
