1st Academy Awards

During the first year of the awards ceremony, nominees could receive recognition for a single achievement, multiple achievements, or their entire body of work for the year. The 1929 Oscars took place three months after the winners were announced, and the official award presentations were made by the Academy's president, Douglas Fairbanks. During the ceremony, twelve awards were presented, and an additional 20 certificates of honorable mention were given to runners-up in each category. Emil Jannings was awarded 'Best Actor', while Janet Gaynor won 'Best Actress' for her work in three films: '7th Heaven,' 'Street Angel,' and 'Sunrise.' It was also the first and only time that the Academy gave awards for both dramatic direction (Frank Borzage for '7th Heaven') and comedy direction (Lewis Milestone for 'Two Arabian Knights'). 'Wings', the first silent film to win, also received the 'Academy Award for Engineering Effects.'
