Elton John was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Joseph R. Biden on the White House South Lawn following his first performance in the venue since a state dinner in 1998 honoring British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Biden praised the singer for his 'powerful voice that moved people and for being an enduring icon and advocate who challenged convention, shattered stigma, and promoted the simple truth that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.' The honor medal, established in 1997, recognizes individuals and groups whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities and expanded public engagement with subjects such as history, literature, languages, philosophy, and more. Each year, up to 12 medals are awarded.
