Elton John and Bernie Taupin at a 1968 photo shoot for Dick James Music, a British music publishing company responsible for publishing the songs of many of the biggest names in pop music, including The Beatles in 1967, they both answered an advertisement in the music paper New Musical Express placed by Liberty Records, a company that was seeking new songwriters. The two men quickly developed a close working relationship and went on to write 396 officially released songs together, including 'Your Song,' 'Rocket Man,' 'Candle in the Wind,' and 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.' Their collaborations created a catalog that has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and includes ten #1 albums (UK and US combined) and 38 gold as well as 31 platinum or multi-platinum albums. However, they always work together in different rooms. Taupin writes lyrics, and John arranges a composition around them, reportedly being able to execute this process in as little as 15 or 20 minutes.
