In 2002, Mattel revealed a pregnant Midge, which allowed children to remove her belly and discover a baby curled up inside. The company wanted the doll to be a prop for parents to use with their children to role-play family situations — especially in families anticipating the arrival of a new sibling. However, some Wal-Mart customers were unhappy with the release, believing it promoted teen pregnancy. Following the controversy, Mattel's 'Happy Family' collection, which included Allan and their 3-year-old son Ryan, was created, and Midge came expecting baby Nikki, who came inside her magnetic, removable womb.
