'Barbie: The Movie' director Greta Celeste Gerwig was known for her performances as an actor in small independent movies like 'Lola Versus,' 'Frances Ha,' and 'To Rome With Love' before embarking on a career as a filmmaker. In 2016, Gerwig wrote and directed Lady Bird, which earned her a Golden Globe for 'Best Motion Picture' - Musical or Comedy, while becoming the fifth woman in motion picture history to receive an Academy Award nomination for 'Best Director.' In 2019, she wrote and directed an adaptation of 'Little Women'. Gerwig was invited to write 'Barbie' by Margot Robbie, who, with Warner Bros, had bought the rights to the film. She wrote the script with partner Noah Baumbach during the Covid pandemic.
