On August 4, 2021, as a tribute to the women on the frontline in the fight against COVID, Mattel introduced the #ThankYouHeroes program, featuring professor Sarah Gilbert, a vaccine expert who headed the development of the University of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom; Amy O'Sullivan, an emergency room nurse at the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY who treated the first COVID-19 patient in the area; Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa, a psychiatry resident at the University of Toronto, recognized for her advocacy against systemic racism in healthcare; Dr. Audrey Sue Cruz, a frontline worker from Vegas, who also used her platform to address racial bias and discrimination during the pandemic; Dr. Kirby White, co-founder of the Gowns for Doctors initiative in Australia, acknowledged for her innovative approach to personal protective equipment; and Biomedical researcher Dr. Jaqueline de Jesus, credited with leading the sequencing of the genome of a COVID-19 variant in Brazil. Barbie herself has a long list of careers in healthcare, including dentist, doctor and nurse.
