During the 2004 Super Bowl halftime, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson took the stage to perform for over 100 million viewers when a wardrobe malfunction caused one of Janet Jackson's breasts to be exposed. Although she quickly covered up, the incident resulted in complaints from the audience. CBS was fined, and Jackson faced backlash. She was blacklisted, and though her 2004 release, 'Damita Jo,' eventually went platinum, mainstream media promotion was limited, causing the album not to sell as well or as quickly as expected. Timberlake attended the Grammy Awards the following week. The stars were accused of plotting it, which they denied. In 2022, Jackson spoke about the controversy in her Hulu documentary 'Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson,' revealing that they had discussed it and Timberlake was unsure if he should make a statement at the time. He has since stated, ' (it) was unintentional, completely regrettable, and I apologize if you guys are offended.' In recent years, Timberlake has also offered public apologies to Janet Jackson.
