'Bennie and the Jets' was the third single from the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album, which Elton John was reluctant to release because he feared it was too strange for the airways. The song is written in the voice of a fan of the make-believe glam rock band 'Bennie and the Jets. In a Rolling Stone interview, Taupin said, 'I saw Bennie and the Jets as a sort of proto-sci-fi punk band, fronted by an androgynous woman...' It peaked at No. 1 on the US singles chart in 1974, where it was certified Gold on 8 April 1974 and Platinum on 13 September 1995 by the Recording Industry Association of America. It had sold 2.8 million copies by August 1976. John duetted the song with Cher on her television show in 1975. This is one of the songs Elton John performed at Live Aid in 1985.
