In 'Barbie' - The Movie' comedian Kate McKinnon plays the role of 'Weird Barbie,' who possesses secret knowledge about the dolls' connection with the children who play with them. The concept behind the character is that she has been subjected to rough play, which explains her ability to do a split, her uneven hairstyles, and her generally cynical outlook on life. Director Greta Gerwig drew inspiration from the novel The Giver and dressed her in bright clothes, which contrasts with the pastel colors of Barbie Land. This is similar to the Receiver of Memories in the novel, the only one who sees life in color.
